A message from Santa J. Ono, President and Vice-Chancellor

It is with very mixed emotions that I wish to announce that Peter Smailes, Vice-President, Finance and Operations, is leaving UBC to take up a new opportunity at Kwantlen Polytechnic University as their Vice-President, Administration.

Peter has worked for UBC for almost 30 years, with the last four years in the role of Vice-President, Finance and Operations. Some time ago, he shared with me his desire to take on a new challenge, and I wish him well in his new role at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

During his time at UBC, Peter has guided the university through capital financing and borrowing, cash management, tax, faculty housing assistance, revenue accounting, business contracts and leases, the relationship with UBC Investment Management Trust and UBC Properties Trust. He also took on the role of Executive Lead for the Integrated Renewal Program, and has provided steady and valued leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
