Announcing the Campus as a Living Lab Grand Challenge 2023 funding recipients
February 26, 2024
Three innovative projects that strengthen UBC’s sustainability leadership have been awarded funding through the annual Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) Grand Challenge 2023 competition.
Faculty and staff from 22 academic departments and units across both campuses applied for this year’s competition, with innovative proposals that blended creativity and research excellence, within UBC and beyond, aimed at addressing the climate emergency.
The two winning projects from the Vancouver campus, which each received $250,000, are focused on generating bioenergy from municipal organic waste and enhancing campus resilience in response to climate hazards. The Okanagan project, which received $100,000, is developing advanced, integrated fire-detection systems for early wildfire detection and risk assessment.
The CLL provides a collaborative framework for the community to address urgent global sustainability challenges in our local context that is aligned with UBC's Strategic Plan: Creating vibrant, sustainable environments that enhance wellbeing and excellence for people...at UBC and beyond.
The CLL Fund competition will open again for project proposals in September 2024.
