A message from Lesley Cormack, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UBC Okanagan; Ananya Mukherjee Reed, Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Okanagan
To the UBC Okanagan campus, Way':
In 2019, UBC Okanagan pledged to support Indigenous students, culture and scholarship through a public declaration of five commitments in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
These commitments were made to support and implement the recommendations of the Indigenous Advisory Committee to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal around meaningful support for reconciliation. They are:
- To develop and deliver an Indigenous culture orientation program for all faculty and staff at UBC’s Okanagan campus
- Create a Senior Advisor role on Indigenous Affairs for the Okanagan campus
- Develop and implement activities that support the revitalization of language fluency
- Advance Indigenous teaching and research through positive incentives and strategies
- Expand health and wellness service to better support Aboriginal students
We have worked hard over the past year toward realizing these commitments and would like to share our progress thus far.
We are honoured to invite you to participate in a remote learning session to discuss UBC Okanagan’s progress on its TRC commitments, the role of post-secondary institutions in response to the TRC Calls to Action and how your work can further inform and contribute to those commitments.
