July 18, 2022
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Simon Bates has been appointed to a new role of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning, pro tem for a 12-month term, effective July 1, 2022.
During his time at UBC, Dr. Bates has served as Senior Advisor to the Provost, Teaching and Learning, and as Academic Director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) before commencing his most recent role in 2018 as Associate-Provost, Teaching and Learning. His contributions in that role include: interim leadership of UBC Extended Learning (ExL); guiding the university’s move to online teaching and learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; and a commitment to the teaching and promotion of academic integrity.
In addition to acknowledging Dr. Bates as a nationally, and globally, recognized leader in education, the creation of the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning position recognizes the importance of teaching and learning; experiential education; and curriculum development as central to our mission.
I believe Dr. Bates will provide strong leadership in this new role. Please join me in congratulating him on his appointment.
Gage Averill
Provost and Vice-President, Academic, pro tem, UBC Vancouver
