Indigenous data sovereignty and conservation in British Columbia
Indigenous Peoples and communities have been stewards of their lands and waters for millennia, and as a result, have developed deep place-based knowledge systems. It is only recently, however, that Western scientists are beginning to recognize that the knowledge and wisdom held by Indigenous Peoples is at once scientific, spiritual, holistic, and action-oriented. While this recognition is long overdue, it is also pressuring Indigenous Peoples to use their lands and knowledge systems to solve environmental crises that are not of their making.

Register for the New to UBC Connections Program - UBC Vancouver
The New to UBC Connections Program is open to faculty and staff in Vancouver in their first year of employment who wish to meet people from outside their faculty or department.The program was piloted successfully in November 2023 and has received a positive response from new faculty and staff.Participants will be matched in groups of three-four and will meet every four to eight weeks to participate in activities or events as a group, based on shared areas of interest.

Anti-racism starts with knowing history
It’s often said that history repeats itself, and racism between citizens and nations is no exception. Threaded throughout human history, including the relatively brief history of Canada, are strands of racism; thicker at some times and thinner at others, but ever present.However, according to Dr. Shirley Chau, an associate professor at UBC Okanagan’s School of Social Work and Co-Chair of UBC’s Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence (ARIE) Task Force, the resurgence of racism doesn’t have to be inevitable.
