I am pleased to announce that Dr. Christina Hendricks has accepted the role of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (AVP), Teaching and Learning, pro tem, for the term July 4, 2023 – June 29, 2024. The Vice-Provost and AVP, Teaching and Learning is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership in areas related to teaching and learning, including continuing education and lifelong learning.

How lab-grown ‘mini-brains’ could reveal the inner workings of dementia — and point to a cure
Over the past 20 years, Alzheimer’s researchers have conducted more than 200 clinical trials of promising candidate therapies, with little success. An effective treatment for the devastating neurodegenerative disease remains elusive. Using 3D bioprinting technology, UBC researchers Dr. Haakon Nygaard and Dr. Brian MacVicar are working to grow tissue models of patients’ own brains. Their work could revolutionize Alzheimer’s treatments.

Apply to the Students as Partners fund by June 16
The Students as Partners fund provides grants to encourage faculty-student partnerships in undergraduate course design at UBC Vancouver. Faculty and undergraduate student partners may receive up to $7,100 to design or revise existing undergraduate courses, as well as dedicated support from an assigned Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology staff member, and access to a learning community. Submit an application by 3pm on June 16.

Gage Averill
Dr. Gage Averill is Provost and Vice-President, Academic, UBC Vancouver. In this role, he provides vision and leadership to the Faculties, oversees the budget, leads institutional planning, and ensures the university maintains excellence in teaching and learning. He joined UBC as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts in 2010, where he played an instrumental role in creating new schools, institutes, research centres, and interdisciplinary programs. Over the span of his career, he has held various leadership positions, such as Vice-Principal, Academic, and Dean for the University of Toronto, Mississauga campus; Dean of Music at the University of Toronto; and Chair of the Department of Music at New York University. Dr. Averill has won a range of teaching, research and literary awards over the years. As a renowned ethnomusicologist, his anthology of historic Haitian music also earned him a Grammy nomination. All of these accolades mark the different passions of his life. Outside of work, he enjoys biking and exploring nature.
