    UBCO researcher swings the pendulum on fibre intake

    A UBC Okanagan researcher wants to turn the tables on the long-held practice of restricting fibre completely for people living with inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Natasha Haskey, a registered dietitian who works with the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science‘s Centre for Microbiome and Inflammation Research, focuses her research on nutrition for people with digestive diseases. Her most recent paper examines whether it’s time to re-think what people living with certain conditions—including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—should eat.

    Summer is here, and families are flocking to beaches, lakes and pools to beat the heat. But, when the right precautions aren’t taken, swimming and other water activities can be risky, especially for babies and young children who can drown in as little as an inch of water—in a matter of seconds. Dr. Ian Pike, Professor of Pediatrics in UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, debunks some of the myths about drowning and shares some evidence-based advice to keep you and your kids safe this summer.

    This UBC professor is spinning the stuff of electric dreams

    A new process developed at UBC to make lightweight electric cars is steering closer to reality. At her lab in the Faculty of Applied Science, UBC materials engineering assistant professor Dr. Yasmine Abdin and her collaborators, Dr. Frank Ko and Dr. Scott Renneckar, have successfully transformed bitumen into carbon fibres – spinning the black, sticky substance from Alberta’s oil sands into a crucial product for the energy transition.
