Welcome to the new academic year
A message from Santa J. Ono, President and Vice-Chancellor Welcome back to campus and the start of the 2022/23 academic year! I hope you all had a good summer. I’ve always loved September because it is filled with promise, with excitement, and with joy. This week, UBC welcomes thousands of new and returning students, and later this month we can look forward to Homecoming.

Leadership change within the Vice-President, Finance and Operations, portfolio
I wish to announce that Karamjeet Heer will be leaving UBC to take up a new role at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Karamjeet joined the university in 2019 as Comptroller and was more recently appointed as interim Vice-President, Finance. Her last day at UBC will be October 31, 2022. Please join me in wishing Karamjeet well in her new role as Associate Vice-President, Finance, at SFU. This is an exciting opportunity and we wish her every success.

Submit nominations for the UBC Chancellor reappointment committee by Sept. 9
Earlier this month, the UBC Alumni Association (alumni UBC) announced that Chancellor Steven Lewis Point is approaching the end of his first three-year term and is being considered for reappointment. As part of the reappointment process, students, faculty and staff were invited to serve on an advisory committee. Thank you to everyone who submitted their nominations.

Submit a proposal for Health Innovation Funding Investment awards
The fall call for proposals for the Health Innovation Funding Investment (HIFI) Awards is now open to faculty members at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan. UBC Health is offering awards of $10,000 to $25,000 to faculty members who are collaborating across Faculties, disciplines, and campuses to develop new teams, pursue new ideas, or translate findings from innovative health-related research.
