A deep dive: Dr. Sumaila on sustainable ocean management in global partnership
When Dr. Ussif Rashid Sumaila was a boy, running and playing with other kids around his home in Nigeria, his grandfather would say, “Children, why are you hitting the ground so hard? You should walk on the earth as if it feels pain.” Only later did Dr. Sumaila begin to understand that his grandfather was, in fact, espousing sophisticated environmentalism.

Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose receives John McNeill Excellence in Health Research Mentorship Award
Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose understands the importance of mentorship for students. When she was a graduate student at UBC, she gained valuable learning experiences from being mentored. Now as a faculty member for more than 14 years, she has been giving back to the academic community through mentorship. Her contributions to student learning earned her the 2020 John McNeill Excellence in Health Research Mentorship Award.

Made to stick: safe, simple additive could cut agrochemical pollution
Adding a simple polymer to fertilizers or pesticides could dramatically reduce agricultural pollution, suggests a new study by researchers at the University of British Columbia. When agrochemicals are sprayed onto crops, a large amount typically ends up in the surrounding environment due to droplets splashing, rebounding or rolling off the target plants.
