Submit a proposal to the Killam Connection Program by March 29
The Killam Connection program provides up to $25,000 to enable UBC faculty to host an innovative and interdisciplinary research forum and graduate course focused around a theme of general interest and public importance, and including a series of invited scholars. The purpose of the Killam Connection is to provide an opportunity for faculty to engage with leading scholars on matters of importance, and for students to gain experience developing and possibly implementing scholarly products oriented to impact beyond academy.

Sarah Brears
Dr. Sarah Brears is the Regional Associate Dean, Interior, for the Faculty of Medicine’s Southern Medical Program (SMP). She provides strategic leadership for the Faculty’s undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs within the Interior. Having gained experience working as a physician in rural, remote and urban regions in Canada, Dr. Brears first joined the SMP back in 2012 as the Family Practice Site Director. She went on to serve provincially as Clinical Experiences Integration Co-Lead and then the MEDD 422 Course Co-Director. Dr. Brears role includes working with partners, such as Interior Health, helping to shape a high-quality educational experience for all of UBC’s learners in the region, as well as facilitating the Faculty of Medicine’s health research strategy for the Interior. In addition to being a family physician, medical educator and mom, Dr. Brears is passionate about working with patients, to help them achieve and maintain wellness. She also enjoys working closely and collaboratively with physicians in the region, helping them meet the needs of their community.

Inspiring the leaders of tomorrow
The whistle blows, and the lead official signals the point to the serving team. A large crowd has packed UBC Okanagan’s Hangar gymnasium to watch a Canada West women’s volleyball match. The lead official, Dr. Jannik Eikenaar, is one of the most seasoned in British Columbia, but this isn’t his full-time gig; by day, Dr. Eikenaar teaches technical communication at UBCO’s School of Engineering.

Culturally significant island in Salish Sea returns to W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations
On Wednesday February 10, SISȻENEM—a culturally important island located in the Salish Sea off Sidney Island—will be returned to its rightful owners. The Land Conservancy of British Columbia and the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council will sign a land transfer agreement for SISȻENEM, a 9.67-acre island that forms part of the territory of the W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations.

Extension of appointment for Dr. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond (Aki-Kwe), Director of the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond’s appointment as Director of the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre has been extended for a second term, commencing June 1, 2021.Dr. Turpel-Lafond has been director of the centre since its inception in 2018. Since that time, she has worked to establish the centre as a leading institution for culturally informed, reciprocal, community-led research, education and dialogues in partnership with Indigenous communities, Survivors and the university.
